The Place: The Little Honeycomb defines eclectic dining—without the high price tag. Sitting prominently on a corner in downtown Winnetka, a site that's housed many restaurants over the years, Little Honeycomb is a relative newcomer that truly offers a menu for everyone.

When we arrived, the space was bright thanks to large windows and the lingering sunset. The décor isn't a strong point—plain wood tables, nicely spaced but not lush or plush. However, we never felt crowded or forced to overhear conversations at neighboring tables.

The Food

You don't often find such an extensive menu: Italian, Mexican, and American classics ranging from chicken parmesan and chicken fingers to tacos and fajitas to burger sliders.

We decided to try the Mexican section, as there's definitely a south-of-the-border orientation. Andrea ordered the shrimp tacos,  Richard went with the chicken fajitas.

Both plates were attractive with sizable portions and tasted good. While perhaps not the best fajitas I've ever had—missing was the traditional sizzling plate and shells in a crock—but as a plus, the food wasn't sitting in a hot plate of oil, a frequent fajita problem. Despite this trade-off, the food was tasty and well-cooked, though the chicken was slightly dry.(  I’m ok with a little  dry, Andrea is not).

Andrea's shrimp tacos were beautifully plated, and she had enough shrimp to share a few with me! If you're like Andrea and prefer flour tortillas over corn, you're in luck—both were available, which isn't common at most restaurants.

The Prices

For an upscale suburb like Winnetka, prices were moderate. Our two entrées and two drinks totaled $56 before tax and tip. Most other menu items were competitively priced or slightly less than what we find at comparable restaurants.

The Experience

Full but not crowded.  When we arrived at 5:15, the room was about one-third full. Then a steady stream of diners nearly filled the space by the time we left at 6:15.

The clientele was pleasantly mixed—a few older couples, several families with kids,  grandparents with grand kids, and a couple of tables that looked like after-work gatherings.

Despite the crowd, it remained a quiet room. People talked at a reasonable volume and were focused on their meals.

Service: Friendly and relatively attentive, without pushy introductions or aggressive upselling of drinks, appetizers, and desserts.

The Verdict

We'll definitely return to try some of the American menu items. Those sliders sure look tempting—and I'm not quite psychologically ready to order chicken parmesan in this eclectic context!
